BLACK RHINOCEROS at Paignton Zoo in Devon
Habitat Scrubland and grassland. Wild Diet Browse (leaves and twigs). Behaviour Rhinos have poor vision but their hearing is good and they can pick up the quietest sounds by swivelling their cone-like ears. However, it is their sense of smell that they most rely upon for knowledge of their surroundings. Breeding A single calf is born after a gestation of 15-16 months. Interesting Fact A rhino's horn is not bone, but made up from millions of tightly compacted hair-like fibres. Threats Habitat destruction and hunting. Conservation There are five species of rhino, all of which are endangered, and only intensive management programmes in zoos and national parks will save them from extinction. Trade in rhino horn is banned world-wide.
