POSSIBILITIES IN SEED FLAX. The production of flaxseed in the United States since 1909 has been less than the demand, and in Bulletin No. 785 of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, "Seed Flax Production," it is shown that under certain conditions it may be profitable to pay more atten- tion to this crop. In this country the production of flax- seed has always been a pidneer industry because the crop does wel^l on new land, is readily marketable and' brings a high price in proportion to its bulk. At the present time it is grown most exten- sively in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Montana. But it can be grown under a wide variety of conditions, and there is no reason why more flax should not be raised on old land in the upper' Missis- sippi valley. The bulletin warns pros- pective growers, however, that east of Minneapolis and Duluth there are few markets where flax can be sold in less than carload lots, and east of Chicago none at all.
