Ferromanganese nodules recovered from the deep Atlantic Ocean floor. These are nodules containing iron and manganese. In geology, nodules are rocks which grow outwards radially around a central nucleus, forming concentric layers. The contents of nodules found in the sea can provide information about changes to seawater chemistry over time. The black and white squares on the scale bar (bottom) are each 1 cm for reference.
