The remains of a D-Day embarkation beach at Lepe, Hampshire.

Lepe in Hampshire, UK is one of the sites where some of the caissons which together formed the Mulberry harbour at Arromanches in Normandy were made. It is also the site of the start of the PipeLine Under The Ocean (PLUTO). The pipeline ran from Lepe, under the Solent, across the Isle of Wight, and under the English Channel. It supplied fuel for the invasion force. Many troops and matériel, tanks, lorries, trucks etc were embarked from here. The photo shows one of the large bollards which ships were tied up to. It also shows some of the concrete mats, which look like bars of chocolate, which were used to provide a firm footing for the heavy tanks as they were loaded.
