al-Malik al-Adil, Kurdish general and sultan. al-Adil was the younger brother of Sultan Saladin, who led Islamic opposition to the European armies during the Crusades. al-Adil successfully governed Egypt and Aleppo on behalf of his brother. Saladin's death, in 1193, lead to a succession dispute between his sons that eventually saw al-Adil emerge as Sultan. He fell ill and died during the Fifth Crusade.
