The Ruins Of Despot Slav’s Fortress In Melnik, Bulgaria


this medieval fortress dates back to 1217. it was built to prevent attacks from Byzantine invaders coming to Melnik over the border. Melnik is the smallest recognized town in Bulgaria with a population of just over 200. it is a significant tourist centre with picturesque national revival house, cobbled streets and the famous local wine reputed as favoured by Winston Churchill. it is very near the Greek border and connected to Sofia by the Sofia to Athens highway.
