In hismessage to the General -Assembly Governor Stewart announced: Missouri will hold to the Union so long as it is worth an effortto preserve it. If South Carolina and other cotton states persistin secession Missouri will desire to see them go in peace with thehope that a short experience at separate government and an hon-orable adjustment of the federal compact will induce them to returnto their former position.
