Phytoplankton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of an assortment of phytoplankton, including the single-celled alga Mallomonas sp. taken from ditch water. Mallomonas sp., a pear-shaped organism coloured blue here, has two flagellae (not seen) and a cell wall which is made up of small overlapping scales. Phytoplankton is made up of an assortment of algae, including diatoms (green at left of Mallomonas), and serves an important biological and economic role in the food chain of both freshwater and marine environments.
