Switchgrass biofuel research. Geneticist (background) and technician examining near-infrared reflectance spectral profiles of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) samples. Switchgrass has been studied extensively for its use as a biofuel crop. This research led to the development of the first near-infrared sensing method for measuring twenty switchgrass components to determine the potential yield. At lower centre is a sample ring containing switchgrass. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
