HICKORY HORNED DEVIL (Citheronia regalis) caterpillar. The adult form is a moth that is known as the Royal Walnut Moth, aka Regal Moth. This is a 5th instar larva feeding on BLACK WALNUT (Juglans nigra) leaves. This species has 5 instars and after the 5th instar the caterpillar crawls down off the foodplant to go underground and pupate. Other common foodplants for this species are sweetgum, hickory, sourwood, pecan, sumac and persimmon. This species is found throughout the eastern and southeastern US and west to the easternmost portions of the Great Plains. This species is a summer flier and is single brooded except in the deep south where it can be double brooded. This larva was photographed in situ in Pennsylvania.
