Portrait print of Martin Luther - Luther (1483 - 1546) was a key figure in the Protestant Reformation.

Portrait print circa 1882 of Martin Luther reading in church. Luther (1483 - 1546) was a key figure in the Protestant Reformation. According to legend he nailed The Ninety-Five Theses, outlining his issues with certain practices of the Roman Catholic clergy, to the door at the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31 1517. Historians question whether this incident ever actually happened but Luther's refusal to retract his writings resulted in his excommunication by Pope Leo X in 1521. Engraving by the Milwaukee Litho & Engraving Co, based on an original painting circa 1882 by F W Wehle.
