This is where the worship of the Charites was born, which later spread to the whole of Greece. These Charites or Graces were goddesses of beauty and grace, who brought joy, beauty and creative power to both the people and the gods. In archaic images, they were still represented as three detached women, dressed in long robes, but in the 3rd century BC. This results in a representation that is still being followed today: three naked women, who hold each other by the shoulders and two of which are shown frontally, while the third is seen on the back. The three graces on this fan hide their nakedness behind the vegetation. The style in which the predominantly blue tinted fan blade is painted is very old-fashioned. One would be inclined to assume that it originated at the beginning of the 18th century. Perhaps an old leaf was put on a new frame and then the narrow, gold-colored ornamental border was added. On the back of the leaf is a whole brown and green house, painted by tall trees and shrubs, on the water. The frame is painted in many colors and adorned with three asymmetrical reserves built up from rocailles, between which runways with Chniees-like 'grecques'. On the outer legs a putto with a winged insect, rocailles with flowers and again 'grecques' (cf. tent. Cat. Ventagli Italiani .., Palazzo Pitti, Florence 1990, , , fig. ).
