This noble building, one of the few architectural boasts ofLondon, stands on the site of a church commenced by Sebert,King of Essex, about the year 610, on what was then an islandin the Thames, called Thorney Island. When King Edgar, 360years afterwards, completed it, it was named from being theminster west of St. Pauls. That structure was laid waste by theDanes. Edward the Confessor (1050) erected another edifice,which was probably nearly as large as the present one. Thishas been thought the earliest church in what is called the Nor-man style erected in Britain. Portions of that building stillexist in the Dark cloister, the sub-structure or undercroft ofthe dormitory (the present Westminster school-room), the lowerstorey of the refectory which forms the south side of the cloiste
