They had all left for their bashikouays swarmed into every house, attackedand overpowered the rats, mice, centipedes, scorpions,spiders, lizards, and the many cockroaches that werethere, and when they went away not one of these wasleft. All had been devoured. Farther on they entered another village. Here thehuman beings were fast asleep. The terrible bites ofthe bashikouays soon awoke them. The bashi-kouays have come ! shouted the people.
