Egret males claim territory before mating begins. INDIA SUNSHINE images show an early-rising Cattle egret preening its furs against a beautiful sunrise. This bird was amongst a group of egrets gathered in Harnai Port, Maharashtra, India, during a fish auction. This port is near Harnai Beach, where daily auctions are held for fresh fish. The auctions start every morning at 8 pm and resume again at 4 pm when the fresh catch is unloaded from the boats. The clever egrets wait for the auction to begin, looking for an opportunity to snap up a few prize catches for themselves. These images were captured by an Indian wildlife photographer, Sundeep Kumar, with a Sony Alpha 9 camera and a 200-600 G lens. “I was on a trip with my office colleagues, and we planned to buy fish through the auction,” he said. “In our eagerness to place bids on the best quality, fresh fish, we reached an hour before the auction started, before sunrise. “Apparently, like us, a number of egrets were also waiting for the auction to start. “I encashed the opportunity of snapping the birds as dawn broke and created a great backdrop for the photographs.” ENDs
