Maiwand Kandahar Afghan Campaign Memorial. Sculptor George Blackall Simmonds. Reading brewing family's tribute - 9 metres tall. One of the world s largest cast iron statues. Unveiled by Lord Wantage in December 1886. In memory of 328 officers and men of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who died in a rearguard action in Maiwand during the Afghan Campaign of 1879 -1880. Cast by Messrs Young and Co of Pimlico in 1866
