There is no doubt thatthe contact of people inlarge cities, the growthof wealth, the advantages of education and all the help-ful things which come of a higher civilization tend tomake the shapes of their bodies more symmetrical andbeautiful, their hands and feet smaller, to improve theirtaste as to the combination of colors, and the fit of theirclothing, and also to make their heads it make them happier ? Perhaps it does. It improves taste and gives akeener appreciation of the beautiful and the enjoyable inmusic, books, the theater, the sermon—in 84 Pkculiarities of Pioneer People. Does it make them better? Positively, no, I could mention a great many ofthe sins and evil practices which are committed and invogue in our larger cities which are unknown amongstthe uneducated classes in our rural districts; and which,it told to them, would either not be believed or would bea n:iost shocking revelation.
