Ziggurats were ancient, massive structures built in the ancient Mesopotamian valley and western Iranian plateau, having the form of a terraced step pyramid of successively receding stories or levels. They were built by the ancient Sumerians, Babylonians, Elamites, Akkadians, and Assyrians for local religions. Now, over 5000 years later, the latest newcomer to the Oxford skyline is the copper-clad ziggurat of the Said Business School, seeking to reclaim this ancient Middle Eastern architectural heritage.
