One of the most important measures for promoting theadvancement of education in Pennsylvania was the passage in1854 of the Act of Assembly establishing the office of CountySuperintendent of Common Schools. The benefits of this systemof supervision have been increasingly felt throughout the State,and in Beaver County the office has been held by a successionof able and conscientious men, who have earnestly devotedthemselves to the improvement of the teaching force, equip-ment, and housing of its schools.
