Visitors' main entrance at Port Arthur consists of its 30 historic buildings, ruins, gardens and parkland on the southeast coast of Tasmania in Australia. The former prison accommodated 2,000 convicts, guards and government civil servants from the UK and Ireland. Before its transformation into a prison in 1833, it was a flour mill. The prison finally closed in 1877. The site is 60 miles from the State capital of Hobart and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and World Heritage List as the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. Port Arthur was named after its first lieutenant governor, George Arthur, a sadist who meted out barbaric treatments to the convicts.
