In 1853 declined the mission to Bolivia, which wastendered to him by President Franklin Pierce. Hewas elected as a representative to the State Legislatureof New Hampshire in 1857. In the same year he wasappointed United States district attorney for Massachu-setts. Mr. Woodbury was elected to the MassachusettsLegislature in 1870 and 1871. He has never aspired. CHARLES LEVI WOODBURY. to political office, although, in addition to his lifelongdevotion to the principles of Thomas Jefferson andAndrew Jackson, with the latter of whom he was per-sonally acquainted, he has often held important posi-tions in Democratic organizations, and has been afrequent speaker in defence of the principles of theDemocratic party in presidential campaigns. He is amember of the New England Historic GenealogicalSociety, and an honorary member of the historical societies of Maineand New Hamp-shire. Mr. Wood-bury has held highoffices in the Yorkand Scottish rites ofthe Masonic organi-zation, and is nowsecond officer of theSupreme Council ofthe latter body, aswell as a member ofthe Board of Trus-tees of the GrandLodge of Massachu-setts.
