Fremont as its first candidate for president in 1856,and was actively interested in the colonization projectwhich resulted in the Kansas conflict and hastened warbetween the states. He was very charitable and gavelargely to philanthropic causes, and a member of Protestant Episcopal Church. George W. Jackson married, in 1836, Mary Beard,daughter of Peter and Ann (Coffey) Beard, paternalgranddaughter of Edward and Mary (Coleman) Beard,of West Hyde, Hertfordshire, England, and maternalgranddaughter of Cornelius and Matilda (Montgomery).
