The last bastion of the once feared Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab, Kismayo fell after night-time amphibious landing by troops the Kenyan Contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) shortly followed a few days later when the Somali National Army (SNA) and the pro-government Ras Kimboni Brigade militia supported by two AMISOM Battle Groups entered the port city on 02 October following a two month operation across southern Somalia which saw the liberation of villages and centres along a distance of 120km from Afmadow to Kismayo.
