THE STUDIO. 55 Fig. 20 illustrates a swing of the usual form, and illustrates a swing used with the Linley camera, thefeature being that as the camera front is focussed thecopyboard is automatically centred—a rather unneces-sary complication. Some workers attach the upperends of the four ropes to a beam which is swungat its centre, like a scale beam, from a singlehook in the ceiling. This, I think, is not a good. arrangement, as it is difficult to keep the camerasteady while focussing, and also it is not easyto preserve the balance, though this is sometimesadjusted with a sliding weight. The only practicaladvantage that has been claimed for this form ofswing is the possibility of twisting it round to suitthe changing direction of the sunlight. But in sucha case a very large studio would be required if theswing were any considerable length. A better idea is to have the beam suspended by 56 THE HALF-TONK ,PROCESS. two hooks, which secure equilibrium in the longitudinaldirection, and the balance can be easily preservedin the transverse direction. There is certainly a gainin using less than four hooks, as it is found that ifone rope is more in tension than the others a strainis set up which causes vibration. Three hooks arebetter than two or four, as they follow the principleof the tripod in finding a level and preserving equili-brium. Springs inserted between the ropes and hooksare good for absor
