An old engraving of Lancaster, a city and the county town of Lancashire, England, UK. It is situated on the River Lune. Lancaster has several unique ties to the British monarchy, with the House of Lancaster a branch of the English royal family. It is dominated by Lancaster Castle, and Lancaster Priory Church. The castle, partly built in the 13th century and enlarged by Elizabeth I, was the site of the Pendle witch trials in 1612. Lancaster also figured prominently in the suppression of Catholicism during the reformation with the execution of at least eleven Catholic priests.
