FRONT ELEVATION AND SECOND-STORY PLAN OF THE DUBUQUE CAR HOUSE, SHOWING ALSO DETAILS OF ROOF- TRUSS CONSTRUCTION gauntlet track will be laid for the purpose of saving the con-tinual wear on special work of the nine tracks entering the carhouse. The topography of the ground occupied by the building isvery uneven. The east end faces upon a street traversed byone of the car lines, while, as shown in the side elevations ofthe building, the level of the ground rises very noticeably to-ward the rear or west end, the ground at that point being on alevel with the second story of that portion. The street on thenorth side of the building runs up an 8 per cent grade to thetower stable section of the building. This, while inconvenientin some respects, is very advantageous to the proper caringfor the stable department of the system, which is of more thanusual importance on account of the fact that here are storednot only the tower wagon and necessary horses, but also a partof the livery facilities
