Nearly a quarter of a million pink-footed geese leave their breeding grounds in Iceland to fly to the UK for the winter. Over 50,000 arrive at WWT Martin Mere from September to October, as a safe haven and to rest up before continuing to Norfolk. Several thousand will stay still spring every year. Like whooper swans pink-footed geese fly by night using the stars to navigate. The cool night air also helps prevent overheating and dehydration.
