Tongue cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a tongue with squamous cell carcinoma (SSC). SCC arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of squamous cells, flattened cells in the epithelium (lining, down left-hand side) of the tongue. Here the tumour has infiltrated deep into the tongue and shows the characteristic keratin pearl formation (bright pink masses at centre). Risk factors include smoking and alcohol consumption. Treatment is with surgery and radiotherapy.
