Henrietta Middleton, ca. 1752–58, Watercolor on ivory, 1 1/2 x 1 in. ( x cm), Paintings, Mary Roberts (died 1761 Charleston, South Carolina), The English émigré Mary Roberts was the first known miniaturist in the American colonies. She arrived in Charleston before 1735 with her husband, Bishop, and after his death in 1740 seems to have supported herself by her work
