Karin Dridge, Norfolk District geographer, looks at oyster shells delivered by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation April 2, 2012. Norfolk District partnered with fourth graders from Virginia Beach’s Seatack Elementary School in 2011 to grow baby oysters in floats and then create an oyster reef at historic Fort Norfolk, where the Norfolk District is located. Norfolk District’s location on the Elizabeth River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, makes it a strategic location for oyster placement.
