King crab (Lithodes maja). This edible animal is not actually a crab but another type of decapod crustacean generally thought to be derived from hermit crab-like ancestors. L. maja lives at a depth of around 800 metres in the colder waters of Europe and North America, from the North Sea across the Atlantic Ocean to Greenland, and from Newfoundland, Canada southwards along the US east coast. The carapace (shell) of this specimen measures 8cm wide.
