The corner of Calle de Los Suspiros and Calle de San Pedro looking into the Calle de Los Suspiros in the historical quarter of Colocia del Sacramento Uruguay in the early evening The Calle de Los Suspiros Street of Sighs is one of the most picturesque and photographed streets in the historical quarter of Coloñia del Sacramento Uruguay I ve come across several stories regarding the origin of the name One story is that prostitutes worked in the street s buildings and it was named for the sounds that could be heard in the street Another is that it was because of the sound that slaves made as they were led down to the river And another that it was named for the sound of the wind blowing from the river This photo was taken using a tripod mounted camera and is a good example of the technique of using a slow shutter speed in low light
