On September 8,1863, at the very position inthese photographs, the garrisonrepelled a bold assault withmusketry fire alone, causingthe Federals severe loss. Theflag of the Confederacy floatedtriumphantly over the positionduring the whole of the longstruggle. Every effort of theFederals to reduce the crumb-ling ruins into submission wasunavailing.
