Grand Master and Grand Cross ranks of the Knights of Malta.

Grand-Master of the hospitaller order of St. John of Jerusalem, or the Knights of Malta, and a knight of the rank of Grand-Cross of the same order. The Knights Hospitaller, or the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, was established in 1118 by Gerard Tenque. Their original purpose was to care for sick pilgrims, but they became a military order around 1140. After being expelled from the Holy Lands, the order evolved into the Knights of Malta. Handcolored copperplate engraving of a knight from a religious military order from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
