Itwas during the hike of the Forty-second that certain weary stragglersfrom that Division stopped at ECompanys Frecourt camp and, hav-ing been well fed, were tucked awayfor the night. As a mark of their gratitude, these men on their departure the next morning, presented to CookJohnson a pup of doubtful parentage which they had been taking with themas a mascot. This was the famous Hardtack—the only Battalion mascotwhich survived to return to America with the Hardtack
