Tomatoes are a popular salad food. Botanically they are a fruit but are consumed as a savoury vegetable. They are a sub-tropical plant so require warmth and light to flourish. In the UK they are grown as an annual summer crop outside but most successfully in small glass houses or green houses. The taller varieties require support using canes or frames. The tomato fruits are produced in trusses (small bunches).
