Pipelines for oil and gas are welded together in Arlington, Texas, USA to get the fossil fuel to refinery. Photo by J. G. Domke

Workers wearing hardhats and protective gloves, weld sections of pipe together before it can be buried underground. First pipelines were wood in 1867 to get oil from western Pennsylvania to the railroad lines to meet the need for kerosene lamps. Today pipelines bring water and natural gas to homes and offices. Extention of Keystone pipeline in the US has become a political issue over big business trying to get oil from Canada to refineries in Texas and environmentalists worried about oil spills.
