Trees; a handbook of forest-botany for the woodlands and the laboratory . ry narrow-lanceo-late. Silky or tomentose beneath. + Leaves linear-lanceolate, with waved edges;about 10—30 x 0-5—2 cm. Salix viminalis, L. Osier (Fig. 109). An osier shrubwith silky shoots and buds, and very narrow and longwaved leaves. Leaves herbaceous, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, acuminate, 10—18 cm. x 5—12 mm., but up to20—30 cm. long, usually about 8—10 times as long asbroad, and pointed both ends: petiole 5—12 mm., dilatedbelow, or sub-sessile. Entire or obscurely toothed atthe wavy margins, which may be also revolute, especiallyin youth. Upper surface green or greyish green and moreor less shining glabrous or pulverulent, and reticulate;densely silvery silky or grey-tomentose beneath, the hairsparallel to the secondaries. Midrib often orange or fawn-coloured, and the venation prominent but not linear-lanceolate to subulate, or on the strong OSIER WILLOW shoots broader and glandular-toothed, caducous, upper stomata. Autumn leaves yellow. 287 No. Fig. 109. Osier, Salix viminalis, p. 280 (Sc). Venation weak, pinnate-reticulate, though the curvedsecondaries breaking up soon after leaving the midrib maybe fairly distinct. Tertiaries weak and numerous, and 288 DOWNY WILLOW, ETC. tend to form cross-ties, coming off at open angles. Thesecondaries are very short, and leave the midrib at openor nearly right angles. [There are several varieties, but the very narrow wavyleaves, silky beneath, characterise the species. The silkyappressed hairs parallel to the secondaries, not to themidrib, distinguish it from 8. alba: see p. 244.] tt Leaves not more than 1—6 x 1—1*5 cm. Salix repens. The leaves may be entire, and maythen be classified here (see p. 243), and similarly withthe rare S. Lapponum (see below). S. nigricans hasalso occasionally narrow and entire stipulate leaves (seep. 292). ** Leaves broader, elliptic to ovate, obovate,&c. f Leaves hoary or tomentose
