Carl Wernicke (1848-1905), German neurologist. Wernicke graduated with his medical degree from the University of Breslau (1870). He specialised in neurology and psychiatry, studying with Theodor Meynert in Vienna and Karl Westphal in Berlin. Wernicke researched speech and language disorders. Conditions named for him include: Wernicke aphasia (speech disorder) and Wernicke encephalopathy (eye, muscle and brain disorder caused by thiamine deficiency). Photograph published by J. F.
