Princess Alexia of the Netherlands, on her first public engagement with the plaque that bears her name, during the Christening ceremony of the dredger ‘VOX ALEXIA’ at the Cruise Terminal. The dredger ‘Vox Alexia’ is named after Her Royal Highness Princess Alexia of the Netherlands, the middle daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. After the christening, the Princess was given a tour of the ship and spoke with crew members and employees of the Young Van Oord association. The Vox Alexia is a trailing suction hopper dredger. This is a type of dredger that can, for example, suck up sand, clay, silt and even gravel from a sea or waterway. The ship is run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), this has a significantly lower CO2 footprint than conventional trailing suction hopper dredgers and are in line with Van Oord's strategy to make the fleet more economical and sustainable. Van Oord is a Dutch family business that works worldwide on hydraulic engineering projects. The company has 5,800 employees and worked on more than 190 projects in 42 countries in 2022. The company has been in existence for 155 UN warns that Sand dredging is devastating the ocean floor. An estimated six billion tonnes of sand is dredged from the world’s ocean every year, endangering marine life and coastal communities. Sand is the most exploited natural resource in the world after water and is used to produce concrete and glass. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said some vessels were acting as vacuum cleaners, dredging both sand and micro-organisms that fish feed on. (UNEP) also state that sand dredging should be banned from beaches to protect coastal resilience and economies. The South China Sea, the US east coast, and the North Sea are among the areas where the most dredging has and is still occurring.
