In the Times account of the launch of The Warrior there occurs thesubjoined passage relative to her rival, La Gloire:— The speed of La, Gloire has been stated to be twelve knots. Now, if the state-ment of one of her officers is to be believed (an officer, too, thoroughly acquaintedwith her engines), the utmost speed that has been obtained from her has been shortof eleven knots, and at this speed the vibration of the stem was so considerable,that it was evident the armour plates would all work loose if it was long and a half to ten knots an horn- is stated to be her utmost average speed, andthis must be considered as a high rate for a ship of such size and weight. Noneattempt to deny the fact that in a sea-way La Gloire rolls almost dangerously. Infact, all iron-clad frigates must roll slowly and deeply, if in their constructionespecial pains are not taken to guard against
