A century ago it became the possession of theEarl of Fife, who spent many thousands of pounds upon it. In 1898 theestate was bought by the Marquis of Bute, who did much to show up thebeauties of the architecture and, but for his untimely death, had pur-posed (it is said) to restore the ELGIN PAST AND PRESENT 275 As the keeper is not always in attendance it is as well to arrangeones visit through Mr A.
