Sèvres Manufactory, manufacturer (French, founded 1756) Modeled under the direction of Jean Jacques Bachelier (French, 1724 - 1806) about 1767–1773 After the Roman goddess Venus is accidentally scratched by one of Cupid’s arrows, she falls in love with the first mortal she sees, the beautiful youth Adonis. Here they are shown in a sensual embrace – Adonis in mythological hunting attire with a hound at his feet and Venus with Cupid and a pair of doves at her side. Incised with a script "B" for Bachelier.
