Sicily bust of Guiseppe (Joseph Whitaker), 1850 – 1936, on Mozia Island


Early in the 20th Century, Joseph (Pip) Whitaker, a wealthy English wine merchant from Masala, became interested in Motya Island, then known as San Pantaleo, because some interesting stoned had been found there. He bought the island and began archaeological excavations. Over many years he discovered an ancient city of a Phoenician civilisation. He built himself a house on the island. The house is now a museum
