Seaman Cottage, Historic Richmondtown, Staten Island, New York
This vernacular cottage was constructed around 1836-37 in Richmnondtown on Staten Island. It was built by merchant Henry I. Seaman (1805–61) at 218 Center St. Seaman had married his second cousin, Katherine Sarah Seaman, who brought her family’s real estate fortune to the marriage. In 1836 he bought 90 acres of farmland east of the village, laid out streets, and began selling building lots. He donated land for the Third County Courthouse at Center Street and Court Place. He himself built five small cottages along Center Street. It is an official New York City landmark.
