PEACHES AND GRAPES IN THE WESTLAND \ MAKING A LAND AND A CLIMATE 19 Loosduinen is in that wonderful 5,000 acres of wind-sweptsand and clay called the Westland, which extends all theway between the Hook and The Hague. But it is no longerwind-swept. The 1,500 market gardeners there have wind-breaks, wind-breaks of brick, wind-breaks of straw orsacking, wind-breaks of wood, wind-breaks of cropped elmor willow. There are even screens to keep out thecold air when the greenhouse doors are opened. Thereare five million square feet of glass in this naturally un-promising Westland—the winter cold freezes the ivy—where more than a thousand tons of grapes and straw-berries are produced in the year. I have heard people say in England that in places inHolland where produce is grown for the English market—and the Westland, for one district, would be badly off indeedwithout Covent Garden for a customer—the land must becheap and wages low. Obviously, land made, as we know it to have been made
