Barn owl chick (Tyto alba) in grass. The barn owl lays between four and six eggs in the spring. These are incubated by the female for around a month, during which time the male brings her food. Young spend up to three months in the nest. The barn owl feeds mainly on mice and voles, and will also take frogs and large insects. It is generally nocturnal and hunts in sparse woodland, heaths and marshy areas. It can reach a length of nearly 40 centimetres, and may have a wingspan of nearly a metre. This chick was abandoned by its parents and is being raised in captivity.
