Dr. Samuel Gale, was the first physician inTroy to reduce the theory of treating smallpox byinoculation to practice. He inoculated many of theinhabitants, who had the smallpox in its vaccinatedform as the result. The thriv-ing village was soon healthyand free from all danger ofany sudden and severe visita-tion of the dreaded Gale was a man far be-yond his time, and this mas-ter-stroke by him broughthim into great public favorand estimation. The early ed-ucation of the son, E. Thomp-son Gale, was received in theselect schools of the town andvillaoe, he afterward enteringthe Rensselaer polytechnic in-stitute when that school wasin its infancy. His studiesat the institute completed, hetraveled widely throughoutthe United States, and return-ing to Troy entered a mer-cantile establishment as clerk, and in 1840 becameone of the firm of Brinkerhoflf, Catlin & Gale, hard-ware m
