Southern Festoon (Zerynthia polyxena), Abruzzo National Park, central Italy

The Southern Festoon (Zerynthia polyxena) is a colourful butterfly of south-eastern Europe (in Spain it is replaced by the similar Spanish Festoon - Zerynthia rumina). It is not common and appears to be declining as well, and its presence is localized. Many subspecies have been described, owing to the variability and number of its red spots.
