Osage ' Oeange ' (547) —Madura (T<3xylon) pomf- fera — is a thorny shrub or tree with alternate entire glossy leaves having milky juice. The large orange-like fruit gives name to the plant. In the past it was extensively used for hedges; for this it was well fitted, because of its thorns and dense growth. The introduction of wire fences has lessened its value to the hor- ticulturist and now it is generally seen as a tree from 30 to 50 feet high.
